O Virgin, for whose blessing all of nature is blessed!
O Virgin, for whose blessing all of nature is blessed!
From the Orations of Saint Anselm, bishop
(Oration 52: PL 158, 955-956)
(Oration 52: PL 158, 955-956)
The sky, the astral bodies, the earth, the rivers, the day, the night, and all that is found subject to the power and service of man, congratulate themselves, O Lady, because, having lost their ancient nobility, they have now been, in a certain manner, resuscitated by you and gifted with a new and ineffable grace.
This is because all these things were dead as it were, having lost their congenital dignity of serving the dominion and utility of those who praised God, for which they were created; they were oppressed and disfigured by the abuse inflicted upon them by those serving idols, for which they were not created. Now they rejoice as if they had come back to life, because they return to be submitted to the dominion of those who confess to God, and are embellished by their natural use.
It is as if they had leaped for joy for this new and priceless grace, by feeling that God Himself, their very Creator, not only reigned over them in an invisible way, but also was seen amongst them, sanctifying them visibly with their employment. These goods, so great, originated from and through the blessed fruit of the sacred womb of the Virgin Mary.
For your plenitude of grace, what was in the country of the dead is gladdened by feeling liberated, and what is above the world is gladdened by feeling restored. In effect, by the glorious Son of your glorious virginity, all the just that died before the vivifying death of Christ are gladdened seeing themselves free of their captivity, and the angels congratulate themselves for the restoration of their city half in ruins.
O Woman full and over-flowing with grace, with the redundancy of your plenitude you mist, revive and reawaken all of creation! O blessed Virgin, brimming over with blessings, by whose blessing is blessed all of nature, not only the creature by the Creator, but also the Creator by the creature!
God gave Mary to His Son, the Only Begotten from His bosom, equal to Himself, whom He loved like Himself; and from Mary a Son was made; not different, but the same, by good fortune and nature it was the same and only Son of God and of Mary. All of nature has been created by God, and God has been born from Mary. God created it all, and Mary gave birth to God. God, who made all things, made Himself from Mary; and in this manner He remade all He had already made. The One Who could make all things out of nothing, once profaned, did not want to remake them without Mary.
God, therefore, is Father of all created things and Mary is Mother of all recreated things. God is Father of all Creation; Mary is Mother of the universal restoration. This is because God conceived the One by Whom all had been made, and Mary gave birth to the One by Whom all had been saved. God conceived the One without Whom absolutely nothing would exist, and Mary gave birth to the One without Whom nothing would be good.
In truth the Lord is with you, since He has made it so that all of nature would be greatly indebted to you and to Him.
PRAYER
Almighty God, who, by the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, prepared a dignified abode for Your Son and, in preparation for the death of Jesus Christ, preserved His mother from all stain of sin, grant us also that, by the intercession of this most Immaculate Mother, we come to You clean of all guilt and sin. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit and is God, for ever and ever. Amen
