Prayer to Receive the New Year
At the end of the old year the whole world is welcoming the new year with parties and fireworks; yet many forget to
celebrate with God, owner of life and time. Therefore, we share this prayer to pray it with your family, community or friends
either before midnight on December 31st, or anytime during New Years Day.
It is recommended to be around the holy manger or crech, if possible. Together begin saying, "In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
Then pray the following:
Reader 1: "Lord, God of time and eternity, Yours is today and tomorrow, the past and the future. At the end of this year and the beginning of the New Year we want to thank You for everything we have received from You.
Thank You for life and love, for flowers, air and sun, for joy and pain, for what was possible and for what could not be. We offer You what we did this year, the works we were able to do, the things that slipped through our hands and what we were able to build with them.
Reader 2: We present to You the people that we love through these months, the friends, new and old, that we met, those closest to our hearts and those who are more distant, those who gave us their hand and those who we could help, with whom we share life, work, pain and joy.
At the same time, Lord, we want to ask for Your pardon, to forgive us for lost time, for money badly spent, for useless words and for wasted love.
All: We are sorry for any fruitless and shoddy works; we ask forgiveness for living without enthusiasm. Also for the prayer that little by little has been put off until now, when I come to present it before You once more. For all forgetfulness, carelessness and those silent moments when I should have spoken up. For all these, I beg your pardon once again.
With the New Year, I pause to reflect before the new calendar that has not yet been put into use, and I present to You these new days that only You know if I will live them.
Today I ask for my loved ones and myself, peace and joy, strength and prudence, clarity and wisdom. I want to live every day with optimism and goodness, carrying a heart full of understanding and peace everywhere I go.
Close my ears to all falsehood and my lips to lying, selfish, scathing or hurtful words. Let me be open to all that is good; may my spirit be filled with blessings and may they be poured out for the good of all in my path. Amen.
Finally, the participants hold hands and pray a Our Father, a Hail Mary and a Gloria. Then, together, they will give a hug saying, "Peace be with you. Happy New Year!"
