Saint Andrew Apostle - We have found the Messiah
We have found the Messiah
From a homily on the Gospel of John by Saint John Chrysostom, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
(Hom. 19, 1: PG 59, 120-121)
(Hom. 19, 1: PG 59, 120-121)
Andrew, after having stayed with Jesus and learning from Him many things, did not keep this treasure to himself; instead he hastened to find his brother, so he could make him a participant in his joy. Notice what Andrew says to his brother: We have found the Messiah (translated, it means the Christ). Do you notice how, from this moment on, Andrew was so eager to teach what he has learned in such a short time? With this he demonstrates the efficacy of the Master who left Andrew so convinced, as well as his own interest and diligence, manifested from that very first moment. This message, in effect, is proper of the soul that yearns ardently for the arrival of the Lord, that awaits His coming from Heaven, who is filled with joy by his apparition, and who hurries to announce to everyone something so grand. This is the proof of true and sincere fraternal love, the mutual exchange of deep, spiritual goods.
It is also worth noting the docility and receptivity of Peter's spirit. At that moment, without delay, he hastens to Jesus. Andrew brought Peter to Jesus - so says the evangelist. We must not be puzzled by Peter's facility to resort to Jesus without previous examination or analysis. The most plausible fact is that his brother explained everything in great detail; for on the other hand the evangelists explain everything in a condensed manner because of their need to be brief. With regards to everything else, the texts do not state explicitly that Peter believed in a single instant; instead, they state that Andrew presented Peter to Jesus, so as to put his brother into the Lord's hands, and that it would be the Lord Himself who would teach him, as he was of the caliber of one more disciple. It is for this very reason, that he came to the Lord.
In effect, when John the Baptist said: this is the Lamb, and he baptized in the Spirit, he left it up to Christ to explain the deeper understanding of these things. All the more so would Andrew do the same, since he did not think himself capable of explaining everything. For this reason he brought his brother to the very source of light, to which Peter hurried with haste and joy, without losing a single instant.
PRAYER
Omnipotent and eternal God, listen to the prayer of your people and grant that, just like the apostle Saint Andrew was on earth predicator of Your Gospel and pastor of Your Church, now in Heaven he be a powerful advocate for us before You. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the Unity of the Holy Spirit and is God, for ever and ever. Amen
