Saint Albert the Great - Pastor and doctor for the edification of the Body of Christ
Pastor and doctor for the edification of the Body of Christ
From a commentary on the Gospel of Saint Luke by Saint Albert the Great, Bishop and Doctor of the Church;
(22,19; Opera omnia, Parisiis 1890-1899,23,672-674)
Do this in remembrance of Me. Two things should be noted here. The first is the command that we celebrate this Sacrament, indicated with these words that He says: Do this. The second is that this Sacrament commemorates the death that the Lord suffered for us.
He thus says: do this. We cannot imagine a more profitable command, more sweeter, most healthy, more loving, more similar to Eternal Life. This is what we are going to demonstrate, point by point.
The most advantageous thing in our life is that which serves us for the forgiveness of our sins and the plenitude of grace. He, the Father of Spirits, instructs us in what is advantageous for our sanctification. His Sanctification consists of His Son's sacrifice, that is, in His Sacramental offering, when He offers Himself to the Father for us and He offers Himself to us for our benefit. For them, I consecrate Myself. Christ, who in virtue of the Eternal Holy Spirit, has offered Himself up to God as a sacrifice without any stain, can purify our consciences from our dead works, taking us to the worship of the living God.
It is also the sweetest thing we can do. What sweeter thing can there be than that through which God shows us all His sweetness? You feed your people with the ambrosia of angels, freely proportioning bread from Heaven, perfect with a thousand flavors, pleasant to all; as it demonstrates to Your children your sweetness, as it serves the desire of all who partake of it; as it converts into what one wants and yearns for, within.
It is the most healthy thing we could be commanded to obey. This Sacrament is the fruit of the tree of life, and the one who eats it with the devotion of a faith that is sincere will never taste death. It is a tree of life for those who grasp it, and blissful are they who keep it. The one who eats Me will live because of Me.
It is the most loving thing we could be commanded to obey. This Sacrament is in effect the cause of love and of union. The ultimate proof of love is to give of one's self as food. The men of my encampment said: 'Let us hope they let us be satiated with His flesh' which is as if one said: "I love them so much and they love Me, that I desire to be in their entrails and they desire to eat Me so that, incorporated to Me, they turn into members of My body. A more intimate or more true way of union between them and I was not possible".
Most similar to eternal life is this command that we have received. Eternal life is in effect a continuation of this Sacrament, as God penetrates with His sweetness those who enjoy the blessed life.
PRAYER
Lord, You who have made Bishop Saint Albert the Great most notable because he knew how to admirably reconcile divine science with human knowledge, grant us to to accept in like manner his magisterium so that, through the progress of sciences, we come to know You and love You better. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the Unity of the Holy Spirit and is God, for ever and ever. Amen
